Anyone that knows me also knows that I’m a huge proponent of local retailers and “shopping local.” That being said, Dick’s Sporting Goods today announced that they will no longer sell assault weapons like those used in the Parkland massacre. Not only will they not sell the weapons any longer, but they’re publically calling for a ban on assault weapons on the federal level.
In addition, the retailer also said that it would no longer sell high-capacity magazines, nor would they sell ANY gun to individuals under 21 years of age, regardless of local laws. This public stance is one of the strongest instituted by an American “big box” store in the national gun debate. As a prominent gun retailer, this announcement is a shot over the bow to the NRA, and as one of the largest gun sellers, this announcement carries significant weight.
During his appearance on Good Morning America, Chairman and CEO Ed Stack said “When we saw what the kids were going through and the grief of the parents and the kids who were killed in Parkland, we felt we needed to do something.” Kudos to you, Dick’s.
I’ll be in to buy my next gloves and outerwear very soon…
